(VOVworld) – Vietnam is among 100 member states to join the third meeting on nuclear weapon free zones at the UN headquarters in New York.

Vietnamese Ambassador Nguyen Phuong Nga, Permanent Representative of Vietnam to the UN said that nuclear weapon free zones have made important contributions to strengthening the global peace and security, as well as nuclear weapon disarmament and non-proliferation.

She noted Vietnam welcomes international efforts to consolidate the validity of Nuclear Weapon Free Zones in Africa, Central Asia, Southeast Asia, Latin-America, Caribbean, and South Pacific region and Mongolian nuclear weapon free status.

Together with other ASEAN members, Vietnam has pledged to implement practical activities in pursuant to the plan of action for the Southeast Asian nuclear weapon-free zone.

The Vietnamese diplomat said Vietnam will strictly abide by regulations on nuclear security and safety while developing infrastructure for Vietnam’s future use of nuclear energy.

Vietnam has actively joined international efforts in the fulfillment of the chairmanship of the board of governors of the International Atomic Energy Agency for the 2013-2014 period.
