th of 142 countries in this year’s Prosperity Index released by the UK Legatum Institute on November 2. Norway was named the world’s most prosperous country for the seventh year running.
Neighbouring countries Denmark and Sweden also made the top five. The UK was 15th, having achieved the biggest turnaround of any major developed economy. The US fell one place to 11th in the ranking, while China, the world’s second largest economy, was 52nd.
Helping Singapore to 17th place was the economy sub-index, where Singapore came in first worldwide. Indonesia, named the top economic performer, climbed 21 places in the rankings over the past seven years to 69th.
The Legatum Institute ranks countries based on 8 criteria. Northern European countries are always near the top of the list due to their advancement in education, business opportunities, economics, average per capita income, health, and social welfare.
