Vietnam sea and island week launched in Bac Lieu
(VOVWORLD) - The Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment on Friday launched a sea and island week in Bac Lieu province and an action month for environmental protection in response to World Oceans Day (June 8) and World Environment Day (June 5).

Speaking at the launch, Deputy Prime Minister Trinh Dinh Dung pointed out serious challenges caused by environmental degradation and pollution, climate change, rising sea level, and overuse and unsustainable use of oceans. He said Vietnam is facing challenges in addressing the environmental issue and promoting sustainable marine economic development. Mr. Dung said Vietnam is joining the international community to protect the environment, sea and islands: “We need to encourage enterprises and the people to use environmentally friendly products and honor role models and initiatives in effective use of natural resources, biodiversity and environmental protection, climate change response, and sustainable development. Localities should pay more attention and work out specific solutions to ensure the livelihood of coastal people.”
An array of community-based programs and activities will be held in Bac Lieu through the next 7 days including mangrove forestation, inauguration of a playground for children from families relocated from protective forests, a conference on Vietnam’s marine economic development strategy, and a painting exhibition featuring environmental protection and economic development in the Mekong Delta.
