Vietnam seeks to boost rice exports to ASEAN
(VOVWORLD) - Vietnam is seeking to maintain its top spot as rice exporter to several Southeast Asian countries by transitioning to higher value varieties, according to a consultation hosted by Vietnam Trade Promotion Agency on Thursday.

In the first quarter of this year, the Philippines was Vietnam’s biggest rice buyer, accounting for more than 40% of Vietnam’s total rice export. Vietnamese rice was also shipped to Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, and Brunei.
As Vietnam focuses on exporting premium products, its rice exports are expected to drop to 4 million tonnes by 2030. The Ministry says that businesses should review rice demand in each ASEAN market, pay more attention to regional trade policies, maximize the advantages created by new free trade agreements, and improve technology to boost the competitiveness of rice exports.
