Vietnam shares experience in natural disaster mitigation
(VOVworld)- The third UN World Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction opened on Saturday in Sendai in Miyagi Prefecture, Japan. Vice President Nguyen Thi Doan led the Vietnamese delegation to attend the event which attracts more than 5,000 delegates.

In her address, Vice President Doan highlighted Vietnam’s achievements in reducing disaster risks and coping with climate change. She stressed the importance of legal documents in designating tasks and responsibility before and after disaster and improving the capacity of the steering committee for natural calamity mitigation. She suggested priorities for training and awareness raising programs to help the community be proactive in coping with natural disasters and promoting scientific application to improve the forecast ability. The Sendai conference is expected to adopt a post-2015 framework for disaster risk reduction. On the sidelines of the conference, Ms Doan paid a courtesy visit to Japanese Emperor Akihito and his wife, met Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon and UNDP Executive Director Helen Clark.
