Vietnam, Sri Lanka hold political consultation

(VOVWORLD) -Deputy Foreign Minister Dang Dinh Quy and his Sri Lankan counterpart Sumith Nakandala co-chaired the third Vietnam-Sri Lanka political consultation in Colombo on Wednesday.

At the meeting, both sides agreed to propose an early visit by Vietnamese leaders to Sri Lanka and to hold the fourth meeting of the Joint Committee this year. The leaders said that as trade and investment are key area of cooperation, a second meeting of the Sub-Committee on Trade Cooperation should be held in Vietnam to reach the set trade target of 1 billion USD in 2020. At the same time, the two sides will create favorable conditions for their businesses to find partners and promote their investment. They also agreed to implement signed agreements on defense and security cooperation, increase information exchange, and share experience in law enforcement at sea.

Vietnam and Sri Lanka reiterated close coordination and mutual support at regional and international forums. Sri Lanka affirmed the importance of maintaining peace and stability in the East Sea, maritime and aviation freedom and unhindered trade activities, as well as the settlement of disputes through peaceful measures in line with international law, including the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea.
