(VOVWORLD) - The top legislators of Vietnam and Sri Lanka have called for raising two-way trade to 1 billion USD by 2020.

During talks in Hanoi on Tuesday, Speaker of the Sri Lankan Parliament, Karu Jayasuriya, and Chairwoman of Vietnam’s National Assembly, Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan also urged boosting cooperation in oil and gas, IT and communications, garments and textiles, rubber, footwear, renewable energy, aviation, and navigation.
Both leaders agreed that the two legislative bodies and their related agencies should strengthen oversight and boost the efficient implementation of signed agreements, increase the exchange of defense delegations, and soon create a security dialogue mechanism at the ministerial level every 2 years.
Madam Ngan said she hopes Sri Lanka will voice its opinions on the East Sea issues and back Vietnam and ASEAN’s stance, especially in navigation and aviation freedom, abiding by international law, and settling disputes by peaceful means and demilitarization in the East Sea.
