(VOVWORLD) - As one of the countries most affected by natural disasters and climate change, Vietnam always attaches importance to implementing global commitments to disaster risk reduction, said Ambassador Dang Hoang Giang, head of the Vietnamese delegation to the UN.

Giang addressed the high-level Midterm Review meeting on implementation of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030 convened by the President of the General Assembly on Wednesday at UN headquarters in New York.

Shifting from passive response to proactive prevention, Vietnam prioritizes the implementation of measures to raise people’s awareness and mobilize all available domestic resources and international assistance to improve disaster response capacity and ensure progress toward the Sendai Framework goals, he said.

Vietnam actively contributes to global and regional efforts to reduce disaster risks, serves as Chairman of the ASEAN Disaster Management Committee in 2023, and deployed search and rescue forces to help Turkey deal with an earthquake disaster in February.

Ambassador Giang proposed three major solutions to implement the Sendai Action Framework. First, put disaster risk reduction at the center of socio-economic development strategies and policies to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals and ensure adequate investment in disaster risk management and prevention infrastructure.

Second, strengthen global and regional partnerships in disaster risk reduction, especially in information and technology sharing, and building data centers and early warning of disasters at all levels.

And third, improve current multilateral mechanisms to effectively respond to disasters, especially in cases where natural and man-made disasters occur at the same time.
