(VOVWORLD) - The Government eyes a growth rate higher than the target set by the National Assembly for next year, according to Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc at an online conference between the Government and localities nationwide on Monday.

The Prime Minister cited statistics of international organizations as evidence for Vietnam’s robust development. According to the International Monetary Fund, Vietnam’s economy has exceeded 340 billion USD to rank in the top 40 biggest economies in the world. The UK’s journal The Economist has honored Vietnam as one of the world's 16 most successful emerging economies. The World Bank reported that an average economic growth rate of 6.8% on a yearly basis in the 2016-2019 period has landed Vietnam in the top ten highest growing countries.
Prime Minister Phuc affirmed that Vietnam has fulfilled its dual task of fighting COVID-19 and maintaining economic growth.
“Under a resolution on socio-economic development in 2021, Vietnam’s National Assembly sets to achieve a 6% GDP growth and keep inflation at around 4%. Though the targets are relatively ambitious, the Government is determined to raise the economic growth target by 0.5 percent to 6.5% and other socio-economic targets,” said Mr. Phuc.

At the meeting, Party General Secretary and State President Nguyen Phu Trong described 2020 as a challenging year. Though Vietnam failed to reach several targets, mainly because of objective obstacles, 2020 was still the most successful year for Vietnam in the 2016-2020 period, said Mr. Trong, who was confident that Vietnam is securing a growing status internationally.
“Foreign relations activities, including in-person and online conferences and working sessions, remained in place in 2020. Their positive results have proved Vietnam’s success as ASEAN Chair, Chair of the ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly (AIPA), and non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC)," said Mr. Trong.
"Vietnam has concluded negotiations and signed two important deals: the EU-Vietnam Free Trade Agreement (EVFTA) and the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP).”
Mr. Trong went on to say that for the first time, the world observed its International Day of Epidemic Preparedness on December 27 at Vietnam’s initiative, which was quickly adopted by the United Nations earlier this month.
He proposed three breakthroughs for Vietnam’s future development: fine-tuning institutions, training high-quality human resources, and improving infrastructure.
