Vietnam, US enhance security, judicial cooperation

(VOVworld) – Vietnamese Minister of Public Security, General Tran Dai Quang, held talks with US Secretary of Homeland Security, Jeh Johnson, in Washington on Tuesday. The two leaders agreed to foster cooperation in security and home affairs and deepen the Vietnam-US comprehensive partnership.

They agreed to maintain current cooperative mechanisms and consider negotiating other agreements to build a legal framework for bilateral cooperation, including treaties on extradition, the transfer of sentenced or imprisoned persons, Mutual Legal Assistance in Criminal Matters, money laundering prevention and control, and exit and entry management.

In separate talks between Minister Tran Dai Quang and Assistant Attorney General for the Criminal Division of US Department of Justice, Leslie Caldwell, both sides agreed to review the outcomes of efforts by the two countries’ law enforcement and judicial agencies to map out cooperation strategies. They were unanimous in furthering multilateral cooperation in the International Criminal Police Organisation (Interpol) and actively coordinating at international workshops, conferences, and forums on traditional and non-traditional security issues.

Minister Tran Dai Quang also held talks with several Senators, who said the US Senate and Congress supported the resolving of disputes by peaceful measures based on international law, including the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea, the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the East Sea (DOC), moving towards the signing of the Code of Conduct of Parties in the East Sea (COC).

Minister Quang praised the American Congress’s contributions to propel bilateral relations, especially supporting Vietnam in the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) agreement negotiations, recognising Vietnam’s market economy status, and removing trade barriers and the weapons ban on Vietnam.
