This has been the second protest by the Overseas Vietnamese community in the Netherlands since China’s illegal placement of an oil rig in Vietnam’s Exclusive Economic Zone and continental shelf. They demanded that China respect the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea and immediately withdraw its drilling rig from Vietnam’s EEZ and continental shelf. They distributed over 500 leaflets, condemning China’s violation and affirming Vietnam’s sovereignty over the Hoang Sa and Truong Sa archipelagos. They signed a letter opposing China which will be delivered to the Chinese Embassy in the Netherlands.
Around 200 Vietnamese and Japanese, Filipino, and Thai friends in Hiroshima and neighboring provinces staged a peaceful protest against China’s actions in the East Sea. During the stage, protesters shouted slogans demanding China withdraw its rig from Vietnamese waters and respect Vietnam’s sovereignty and international law. They condemned China’s provocative acts in the East Sea, including ramming and damaging Vietnamese vessels. The protesters donated about 21,000 USD to the owners of a fishing boat in Da Nang, which was sunken by Chinese vessels.
In Vientian, Laos, the Vietnamese community on Sunday held a prayer for Vietnam’s territorial integrity and raised funds in support of fishermen and marine law enforcement forces.
