Vietnamese in Laos commemorate soldiers who fell in battle at Gac Ma
(VOVWORLD) - At a requiem at Phat Tich pagoda in Vientiane on Monday, Vietnamese people in Laos paid tribute to 64 soldiers who sacrificed their lives defending Gac Ma (Johnson South) Reef in Vietnam’s Truong Sa (Spratly) archipelago 34 years ago.

Venerable Thich Minh Quang, head of the coordinating board of Buddhism in Laos and the pagoda’s head monk, recalled the battle that took place at Gac Ma on March 14, 1988, and stressed the significance of the requiem.
He called on younger generations to carry forward the tradition of safeguarding Vietnam’s sovereignty over its land, sea, islands, and continental shelf.
