(VOVworld) - Vice President Nguyen Thi Doan highlighted Vietnam’s efforts to ensure gender equality, and increase the status and creativity of women at the opening ceremony of the 25th Global Summit of Women in Sao Paulo, Brazil, on Thursday. Doan emphasized women’s contributions to Vietnam’s economic development, particularly economic restructuring and growth model transfer. Regarding challenges facing women, she stressed the importance of strengthening gender equality policies and strategies, expanding the role of women, and improving women’s knowledge and skills.  She called on the summit to support Nepalese women who have been seriously affected during the two recent earthquakes. To the 50,000 USD donated to Nepalese women by the Vietnamese government, the Vietnamese delegation to the summit will add another 10,000 USD.

At the opening ceremony, Vice President Doan received the Global Women’s Leadership award for her efforts to expand the role of women and her contributions to connecting Vietnamese female entrepreneurs with others around the world.

Established in 1990, the Global Summit of Women is held annually to boost female participation in and contributions to global socio-economic development, especially in business. This year’s three-day event drew some 1,000 delegates from 63 nations and territories around the world.

Also on Thursday, Ms. Doan met President of the Communist Party of Brazil Renato Rabelo, and told him the Communist Party of Vietnam wishes to step up cooperation with the Brazilian Communist Party to strengthen the Vietnam-Brazil comprehensive partnership. The mayor said Sao Paulo wants to strengthen cooperation with Vietnam, especially in economics, trade, investment, culture, science, and technology, and is eager to twin with Vietnamese localities. Ms. Doan invited Mayor Haddad to visit Vietnam and boost ties between Sao Paulo and Vietnamese major cities like Hanoi and Ho Chi Ming City.
