(VOVworld) - Specialists at Vinmec International Hospital in Hanoi have performed stem-cell therapy on a one-year-old baby boy to try to overcome the effects of cerebral palsy or brain paralysis. The operation, whose results are not expected to be known for at least 3 months, was the first of its kind performed in Vietnam. The boy, known as Bui Duy Nghia, has been suffering from the ailment since he was 10 months old due to blood sepsis, which was accompanied by diarrhea, high fever, and convulsions. The blood poisoning left him with a brain starved of oxygen, which caused body stiffening and other problems including the inability to properly communicate. According to Vinmec doctors, the stem cells came from the baby's bone marrow. They were injected into his blood and spinal cord to replace or support the injured brain tissue. The boy is scheduled to have a second injection of bone-marrow cells this Friday.
