Washington's effort to build new relations with Egypt
U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton on Saturday met with newly elected Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi. She was the first US senior official to visit Egypt since the country has the first democratically elected President.
Clinton said the United States supports the full establishment of democratic rule in Egypt and the return of its military to an exclusively national security role. Clinton pledged to support Egypt with hundreds of millions of dollars in debt relief, private investment capital and job creation funds. Clinton’s visit is seen as Washington’s effort to build new relations with Egypt and reinforce the US’s impact in the region. But, the visit also faces protests of the Muslim Brotherhood’s opposition force who have accused the US to plot with the Muslims to bring them to the power.
