Impressive hallmarks of Vietnam’s Internet

(VOVWORLD) - February 11  is Internet Safety Day. Vietnam now has more than 78 million Internet users. That figure is expected to reach 100 million soon, an important milestone in international integration and building a digital economy.
Vietnam is building a modern, secure, high-speed Internet infrastructure, an essential foundation for the nation’s digital transformation, industrialization and modernization.

Wide Internet coverage

Vietnam has one of the highest numbers of Internet users in the world. According to a survey by Singapore market research company DataReportal, Vietnam ranks 6th in Facebook users (66.2 million), 7th in TikTok users (50.6 million), and 9th in YouTube users (63 million).

Vietnam’s Southeast region has the highest rate of households using the Internet (78.3%) and the Central Highlands region has the lowest rate (46.1%). Among Vietnam’s 53 ethnic groups, excluding the Kinh majority, the Hoa ethnic group has the highest rate of households using the Internet (83.7%), followed by the Ngái ethnic group (81.9%). The La Hủ ethnic group has the lowest rate (10.2%).

As the number of Internet users has grown, Vietnam's Internet speed has improved. According to statistics published last year by Ookla Speedtest, both fixed and mobile broadband speeds in Vietnam have increased in terms of performance and global ranking. This improvement reflects a growing investment in infrastructure by domestic service providers.

The Internet is entering a smart era with the introduction of new technologies (IPv6, 5G/6G, IoT, AI, Blockchain) leading to a boom of new devices and the need to shift to the new generation IPv6 Internet address standard. Vietnam is at the forefront of adopting IPv6, its 65.5% usage rate in 2024 ranking second in ASEAN.

Nguyen Hong Thang, Director of the Vietnam Internet Center, said: “Vietnam's Internet infrastructure has grown larger, faster, safer, and more efficient. We are rapidly transitioning to the new generation of IPv6, with Vietnam ranking 7th in the world for five consecutive years as a pioneer in adopting IPv6.”

According to the Vietnam Internet Center, Vietnam’s Internet core infrastructure operates stably, with a Service Level Agreement performance reaching 99.99%. Last year routing security incidents decreased 73%.

The Internet serves development

The Internet is a key factor in developing digital data, digital technology, and digital transformation in Vietnam, driving socio-economic growth and technological advancement.

Vietnam is aiming for a larger, faster, safer and flatter Internet, on a par with the systematic implementation of the Information and Communications Infrastructure Planning for the 2021-2030 period, with a vision to 2050. Vietnam has created incentives for the development of Internet infrastructure and identified strategies for developing Internet resources. Programs to develop the 5G network and broadband Internet are being strongly deployed to help Vietnam keep up with global trends.

Vietnam’s goal is to build a leading digital infrastructure in Southeast Asia. By 2030, the 5G mobile network will cover the entire country and everyone will have low-cost access to broadband Internet. Vietnam will focus on achieving technology independence, data safety in cyberspace, and Internet integration into all socio-economic development activities.
