(VOVWORLD) - Between 60 and 70% of 10,000 communes in Vietnam will be merged, National Assembly Chairman Tran Thanh Man said at the NA Standing Committee session in Hanoi on Tuesday.

District-level administrative units will be abolished and provinces will be merged, representing a massive workload, Mr. Man added. 

“Given the ongoing administrative restructuring, the National Assembly Standing Committee must act proactively and urgently. The Committee is expected to hold additional meetings for at least half a month, beyond regular working hours,” he said.

The National Assembly will decide on the merging of provinces and the Standing Committee will be responsible for the arrangement of communes, according to Chairman Man.

He said the National Assembly’s extraordinary session last month passed a number of laws, resolutions, and policies to improve state governance and achieve GDP growth of at least 8% this year and double-digit growth in coming years.
