April 30 victory is an event of global significance: French historian

(VOVWORLD) - “The victory of April 30, 1975, was a turning point in the Vietnamese people's struggle for national liberation and reunification and an event of global significance”, said French historian Alain Ruscio at a seminar on Vietnam's liberation of the South and national reunification.

At the seminar, held Saturday in Paris by the Union of Vietnamese in France, Ruscio said Vietnam’s victory had global significance because it showed that a small nation with courage and unity could triumph over seemingly invincible forces. It was also a victory for the worldwide movement of people who supported Vietnam’s independence.

He said the most crucial factor behind the victory of the Vietnamese people was unity — something Western countries failed to fully comprehend.

"That was a major mistake of Western countries. They failed to understand that the unity of the Vietnamese people was the central factor. They did not realize that within Vietnam — whether in the North, the South, or the Central region — there was only one nation, one language, and one culture," said Ruscio.
