At the 25th Arab League Summit in Kuwait next week, Arab League officials are expected to make an official decision on this issue and oppose recognition of Israel as a Jewish state. The agenda will focus on Palestinian-related issues including reviewing the Arab Peace Initiative, evaluating Palestine-Israel peace talks, discussing the status of the Golan Heights, and supporting Palestinian refugees in Lebanon.
At the 2002 Summit in Lebanon, the Arab League approved the Arab Peace Initiative, which calls for establishing a Palestinian state in co-existence with the Israeli state based on the 1967 borders. The initiative also proposes a settlement of the Palestinian refugees issue in exchange for full normalization between Israel and the Arab world – a settlement hat Israel has always opposed.
