(VOVWORLD) - On Monday, Keir Starmer became the first British Prime Minister to attend an Armistice commemoration in France since World War II, as the two countries appear to be forging closer ties ahead of an incoming Donald Trump presidency.

The last UK leader to attend a commemoration in the French capital was Winston Churchill in 1944.
Ahead of Monday’s commemoration, Starmer met French President Emmanuel Macron for a bilateral meeting to discuss the conflict in Ukraine, European security, and the humanitarian situation in Gaza.
He is expected to meet French PM Michel Barnier, who was a negotiator during Brexit from the EU.
