Covid-19 updates from around the world

(VOVWORLD) - Chinese Health Commission spokesperson Mi Feng has said that China has passed the peak of the Covid-19 epidemic. 

Wuhan city, ground zero of the new coronavirus outbreak, reported five new cases on Friday, the second day in a row the tally has been less than 10, while no locally transmitted infections were reported in the rest of the country. Excluding Wuhan, Hubei has reported no new infections for eight consecutive days, according to China’s National Health Commission.

The World Health Organization’s Director General said Thursday that the new coronavirus outbreak "is a controllable pandemic" if countries step up efforts to fight it. He told diplomats in Geneva that describing the contagion as a pandemic does not mean countries should give up trying to keep it from spreading further.

As of Thursday evening, the world had confirmed 130,000 cases and more than 4,700 deaths in 125 countries and territories.

South Korea confirmed 114 more cases, raising its total number of infections to nearly 7,900. The Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (KCDC) reported 5 more deaths, lifting the total to 66.

Japan confirmed 23 deaths out of a total of more than 1,300 cases.

The Iranian Health Ministry said 75 people have died from Covid-19 in the last 24 hours, raising the number of deaths in Iran to nearly 430.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau will be in isolation for two weeks after his wife tested positive for coronavirus on Thursday.
