Environmental Protection Law to include climate change response
(VOVworld)- National Assembly deputies on Monday discussed revisions to the Law on Environmental Protection concerning relations between the environment and climate change. They stressed that provisions on climate change needs to be appropriately stipulated in the Law on Environmental Protection. Mai Thi Thuy is a deputy from Tuyen Quang province: “Climate change and adaptation to climate change is now a burning issue in the world. Climate change response is an important task for Vietnam, but this issue has not been appropriately stipulated in the draft law. So, the drafting committee needs to design a separate chapter on the issue”.
Nguyen Minh Lam, a deputy from Long An province says planning environmental protection is one solution to cope with climate change: “Planning environmental protection is very important for environmental protection management. However, this has not been included in the law. So, it’s crucial that we design a scheme to create a legal foundation for environmental protection, ensuring the target of sustainable development at different levels. This issue was also touched upon at the 11th National Party Congress. Therefore, planning environmental protection should be included in the draft law and be carried out at two levels: municipal or provincial and regional levels”.

Due to the huge impact of climate change, Vietnam aims to proactively adapt itself to climate change by 2020 by preparing for natural disasters, reducing green house gas emissions, effectively and sustainably exploiting resources and strengthening efforts to cope with rising tides and sea levels in the Mekong River Delta, Red River Delta and the central coastal provinces.
