Envoy Lakhdar Brahimi pays first visit to Damascus

UN and Arab League envoy to Syria, Lakhdar Brahimi, met with Syria’s foreign minister in Damascus this week in an effort to find a solution to Syria’s deadly 18-month crisis. Today Brahimi will meet President Bashar al-Assad and opposition groups. Brahimi’s mission is to sell a diplomatic solution to the crisis despire the failure of Kofi Annan's earlier peace plan.  Syria’s Deputy Foreign Minister Faisal Muqdad believes that Brahimi has a general understanding of the situation and a way to solve the problems despite their complexity. He said the Government is optimistic and wishes Brahimi success.
