Leaders of the 28 EU members are focused on high-tech economies, economic growth, and unemployment, as well as on the bloc’s Currency-Monetary coalition. But US spying that may have targeted German Chancellor Angela Merkel preoccupied the meeting as soon as it opened. At the opening ceremony, leaders of many European countries including Netherlands, Poland, Sweden, Belgium, Austria and Germany, said US spying on its allies is unacceptable. Immigration will be another hot issue at the summit after 2 recent ship wrecks off the Italian coast killed more than 400 people. 17-20 thousand people have died trying to cross the Mediterranean, and the EU Border Security Office says that in the last 2 years about 16 thousand immigrants have been rescued in the Mediterranean. EU leaders will discuss ways to improve the effectiveness of immigration policies and the agenda of next month’s Eastern Partnership Summit.
