(VOVworld) –On Thursday, Syrian government troops cut off the only road in and out of rebel-held areas of Aleppo despite a unilateral three-day ceasefire declared Wednesday by the Syrian army. The ceasefire was declared on the occasion of the Eid al-Fitr holiday, marking the end of the holy month of Ramadan. But, the fighting continues in Aleppo and surrounding areas.

According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR), Syrian government troops attacked several districts in rebel-held areas, while the rebels fired on the government-held Sayf al-Dawla neighbourhood killing 5 people, including 1 child. The rebel group Jaish al-Islam said four of its fighters were killed while fighting to stop Syrian troops from cutting off the Castello road.
The Castello Road wraps around Aleppo's eastern and northern edges then leads into the rebel-controlled area. Syrian forces have been trying to cut the road for more than two years.
