In March, France will hold an open debate on children and armed conflict, where UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon is expected to give a speech. France also plans a debate on Afghanistan, during which the Council will renew the mandate of the UN Assistance Mission there.
Under the UN Charter, the Security Council is primarily responsible for the maintenance of global peace and security. Its 15 member states take the presidency on a monthly basis.
