Merkel voiced support to the current policy to reduce the number of migrants to the Europe by rooting out the cause for which refugees leave their countries, re-establishing EU’s external borders, and adjusting refugee quota plans for EU countries. As a long-term solution, she underlined the need for EU members to reduce the number of refugees remarkably to provide better help for truly vulnerable people.

Merkel also warned of possible consequences of closing borders with Greece and Macedonia and expressed her pleasure when 90% of German people support the reception and protection of those who have to flee from terrorism, wars, or persecution. Merkel considered the humanitarian circumstance in Syria “beyond the reach” and reiterated a proposal of a no-fly-zone in Syria to protect refugees.

Merkel said she found many of London’s proposals on EU innovation reasonable and feasible, not only for the UK’s sake. She supported the requirement for EU’s social welfare system improvement, adding that each country has its right to protect its social system, while upholding principles of freedom of movement must be remained.
