Participating in the negotiations included EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton. Addressing prior to the talks to be held at the sidelines of the 69th Session of the UN General Assembly, US chief negotiator, Wendy Sherman, acknowledged that both sides “remain far apart” on the size and scope of Iran’s uranium enrichment capacity. She called on Iran to increase efforts in this round of talks and underscored that Iran’s current uranium enrichment is unacceptable. Leader of the Chinese delegation Wang Min urged parties involved to make full use of the talks to reach firm steps forwards. He insisted that all sides want to get a comprehensive deal as soon as possible.
The P5+1 group includes five permanent members of the UN Security Council – the United States, Russia, China, France and Britain – plus Germany.
