(VOVworld) - Reuven Rivlin, a member of the rulling Likud party, became Israel’s 10th President on Tuesday. According to Yuli Edelstein, Speaker of the Knesset , Rivlin won 63 out of 120 votes, and defeated Meir Sheetrit of the moderate Hatnuah party, who received 53 votes. Rivlin resume office next month when President Shimon Peres resigns. The new 74-year-old President used to be a lawyer and served as chairman of the Knesset for two terms. This far-right politician supports Israel’s settlement construction plan in the West Bank and East Jerusalem, and strongly objects to the establishment of a Palestinian state.
