They were Iraqi Sajida al-Rishawi, who Amman sought to swap for al-Kassasbeh, and Ziad al-Karboli, an al-Qaeda high-ranking member.
US President Barack Obama said that IS’s killing only encouraged the international community to exert more efforts in the fight against extremism. A statement released by the US Department of State said that US Secretary of State John Kerry and Jordanian Foreign Minister Nasser Judeh had signed a memorandum of understanding under which the US would give Jordan 1 billion a year over the next 3 years to strengthen security. The aid is waiting for approval from the US Congress.
Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe condemned the killing as “unforgivable” and sent his condolences to the victim’s family. He said that Japan stood side by side with Jordan in this difficult moment.
The Canadian police said on Tuesday that they had destroyed a network for recruiting militants for IS in Canada.
