Munich conference: interest conflict between powers
|
(VOVworld)- The annual security conference in Munich, Germany is becoming hotter due to contrary opinions over Syria and Ukraine issues between Russia, the US and the EU. Ukraine's future sparked angry exchanges at a summit in Munich. European Council President Herman Van Rompuy said the "future of Ukraine belongs with the EU" while US Secretary of State John Kerry said the US backed Ukraine's "fight for democracy". Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov accused Western countries of double standards over violent protests. Meanwhile, the US and Russia have different opinions on the Syrian issue. Following failures of their talks at the Geneva 2 conference, in this summit, both sides held bilateral talks however, they still failed to reach a consensus on the political future of President Basha Al Assad. While the US still supports the opposition party in Syria and agrees that President Assad must leave, Russia insists that Syria’s future should be decided by Syrian people without any outside intervention.
