(VOVworld) – At a meeting with former US President Bill Clinton on Thursday, Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong affirmed Vietnam’s policy of respecting and promoting relations with the US. He appreciated Mr. and Mrs. Clinton efforts to remove trade barriers and promote relation normalization between the US and Vietnam over the past 20 years. He also spoke highly of the Clinton Foundation for supporting Vietnam’s poverty reduction, healthcare, environmental protection, and resolving the war aftermaths.

Mr. Clinton said the US respects and wants to enhance multilateral relations with Vietnam. He underscored the historical meaning of Party leader Trong’s coming visit to the US and wished him success.

President Truong Tan Sang welcomed former US President Bill Clinton in a reception in Hanoi on Thursday during his visit to Vietnam on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of diplomatic ties. President Sang said reconciliation is an important foundation for current achievement in bilateral cooperation.

He hailed the upcoming visit to the US by Party leader Nguyen Phu Trong as a symbol of trust in political cooperation between Vietnam and the US. President Sang welcomed the US active support for Vietnam in its negotiation on the Trans Pacific Partnership Agreement. He welcomed the US stance in the East Sea and reiterated Vietnam’s wish to settle conflict by peaceful means based on international law, especially the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea and the Declaration on Conducts of Parties in the East Sea.

Former President Clinton praised the normalization of relations as an example of narrowing differences in the world context of conflicts as well as progress in bilateral economic ties. He said the current TPP negotiation has won support in both parties in the US Congress as it was 20 years ago before the normalization of relations.
