The agreement would clear the way for Japanese military aircraft and naval vessels to refuel in the Philippines, Mr Aquino said, allowing them to extend their range of operation in the East Sea. During a joint press conference in Tokyo, Mr Acquino and Japanese prime minister Shinzo Abe agreed expand joint military exercises and to cooperate in building up the Philippines Coast Guard.
Tokyo already has agreements on military equipment and technology transfers with the United States, Britain, Australia and France.
