PM says bombs, mines, an urgent issue
(VOVWORLD) - Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc has asked for the urgent effort to deal with landmines and unexploded ordnances left from war. Mr. Phuc said that although the war has been over for dozens of years, landmines, UXOs, and toxic chemicals still affect human health and well-being in many parts of Vietnam.

Mr. Phuc made the statement at an exchange program in Hanoi on Tuesday on joint efforts to deal with landmines and other unexploded ordnances. He said UXOs and toxic chemical contamination have slowed socio-economic development and limited Vietnam’s realization of sustainable development goals.
To address the problem, the Party and the State have created policies and guidelines for cleanup work and support for the victims of landmines and toxic chemicals and their dependents, PM Phuc added.
“We first need to make bomb, mine, and toxic chemical removal a priority to protect people’s safety and ensure their sustainable economic development. Second, we must review and improve relevant policies and laws, particularly those providing medical care and creating jobs for victims of bombs, mines, and chemicals,” said Mr. Phuc.

PM Phuc attended a ceremony to debut the National Steering Committee on the Settlement of Post-war Unexploded Ordnance and Toxic Chemical Consequences, known as Committee 701. He also launched a program to send SMS messages to support the Vietnam Fund for Bomb and Mine Consequences.
