Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc met with foreign leaders on the sidelines of the expanded G7 summit

(VOVworld) - Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc met several foreign leaders on the sidelines of the expanded Group of Seven (G7) Summit in Japan’s Mie Prefecture on Friday, affirming the Vietnamese government’s determination to deepen economic ties with partners.
He hopes countries will support Vietnam’s status at international forums and organizations, including Vietnam’s nomination as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council for the 2020-2021 term and UNESCO General Director for the 2017-2021 term.
For the East Sea issue, Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc hailed countries’ constructive views and support for Vietnam and ASEAN to peacefully resolve disputes in the East Sea, in line with international law, including the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea, to guarantee security, free navigation and aviation in the East Sea, contribute to peace, stability, and prosperity in the region and the world.

Meeting French President Francois Hollande, the Vietnamese PM wished that both countries would improve their mechanisms for exchanging and coordinating economic and national defence-security cooperation, and push forward investment across infrastructure, transport, energy, aerospace aviation, agriculture, food processing, pharmaceuticals and green industries. The two leaders agreed on steps to double two-way trade in the near future and work closely together to realise the Paris Agreement adopted at COP 21.

In a meeting with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, the PM urged Canada to offer technical assistance to Vietnam to improve its enforcement of the Trans-Pacific Partnership and encourage Canadian firms to invest in Vietnam. Trudeau promised continued support to Vietnam, including its nomination to the post of a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council for 2020-2021 and favorable conditions for Vietnamese nationals living in Canada.

In separate meetings with President of the European Commission Jean Claude Juncker and President of the European Council Donald Tusk, Mr. Phuc asked the EU to offer technical assistance to Vietnam to carry out the recently-adopted Partnership and Cooperation Agreement.

Earlier, the PM met bilaterally with the German Chancellor, British Prime Minister, US President, Italian Prime Minister, and the World Bank President.
