(VOVWORLD) -At least 179 people were killed and 145 others missing by devastating floods and landslides triggered by Typhoon Yagi in northern Vietnam as of 5.30 pm on Wednesday, according to the Department of Dyke Management and Natural Disaster Prevention and Control.

The most dead and missing people are reported in Lao Cai, Cao Bang, and Yen Bai province. Many offices, schools, and people's houses were damaged and their roofs were blown off. Communication towers and mobile transmission stations were destroyed.
Authorities are racing against time to rescue people. Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh on Wednesday requested the involvement of the entire political system to take every response action and measure and 24-hour standby. The Ministry of National Defense, the Ministry of Public Security and unaffected agencies and localities must support others ravaged by storms, floods and landslides.

In Lang Nu village, Lao Cai province, where a raging landslide buried 40 households, more than 600 servicepeople are in rescue work around the clock. Hoang Quoc Bao, Secretary of Bao Yen District Party Committee, said: “The locality still suffers outage. We are actively working with functional forces such as the police, army, militia and local people to search for bodies still buried under the rubble.”
In Tuyen Quang province, authorities mobilized maximum force to move people from flooded areas. Pham Hong Hanh, Chairperson of the Fatherland Front Committee of My Bang commune, Yen Son district, told VOV: “Now all the elderly people have been moved to a safer place. The Front's fanpage and zalo groups and member organizations have posted notices for people to be vigilant and take countermeasures to minimize economic damage.”
In Yen Bai province, 11,000 people have been mobilized to overcome disaster aftermath. Many charity groups in provinces and cities across the country have brought medicine and food supplies to flooded households.
The Vietnamese community abroad have sent donations to their compatriots. The Vietnamese Embassy, the Vietnamese Federation and Vietnamese associations in Japan on Tuesday called for donations to people affected by Typhoon Yagi. In response to the appeal, Sun Shine Joint Stock Company of Japan donated 8,000 USD and began purchasing food and essential supplies for the first round of relief to Thai Nguyen and Yen Bai provinces.
