US Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel (L) speaks with Supreme Allied Commander Europe US General Philip Breedlove during a roundtable meeting of the North Atlantic Council at NATO headquarters in Brussels on February 5, 2015. The US and its allies split over supplying arms to Ukraine.

(VOVworld) – Russia warned the US not to give weapons to Ukraine, saying it would undermine bilateral ties. Russian Foreign Ministry spokesman Alexander Lukashevich said Thursday that Moscow is “deeply concerned” about US plans to provide the Kiev government with weapons. He said it would escalate the situation in eastern Ukraine and threaten Russia’s security, given that there has already been shelling from Ukraine into Russian territory.
A number of NATO defence ministers also expressed their disagreement with US plans to supply weapons to Ukraine. Ursula von der Leyen, Germany’s Defense Minister, told a press conference following a NATO defense ministers meeting Thursday in Brussels that arming Ukraine would be a mistake. Dutch Defense Minister Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert insisted that political dialogue is the only way out of Ukraine’s crisis, a sentiment shared by Italian Defense Minister Roberta Pinotti.
