S. Korea, US discuss next steps in diplomacy with North Korea
(VOVWORLD) - Top diplomats of South Korea and the United States met in Washington on Friday to discuss the next steps in their diplomacy with North Korea as negotiations to dismantle the North's nuclear weapons program have stalled.
South Korean Foreign Minister Kang Kyung-wha and U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo met for the first time since last month's nuclear summit in Vietnam between U.S. President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un concluded without a deal. The two sides were expected to share their assessments of the current situation and seek ways to revive negotiations with Pyongyang.
President Donald Trump said on Friday that he decided not to put additional sanctions on North Korea because he wanted to maintain a good relationship with leader Kim Jong Un and because the North Korean people were already “suffering greatly.” Trump told reporters at his Florida resort that he didn’t think that additional sanctions at this time were necessary. But it doesn’t mean he doesn’t put them on later. Trump said he has a very good relationship with Kim.
