Samsung opens its largest regional R&D center in Vietnam

(VOVWORLD) - Samsung's opening an R&D Center in Vietnam is a reflection of its commitment to long-term operations in Vietnam, said Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh, adding that Samsung is the largest foreign investor in Vietnam, with total registered investment of nearly 20 billion USD.

PM Chinh made the statement at the inauguration ceremony of a 220-million-USD Samsung R&D Center in Hanoi on Friday. Samsung kicked off construction of the center, its largest R&D facility in Southeast Asia in March, 2020. The center will be in charge of R&D for Samsung’s mobile devices, including smartphones and tablet PCs as well as software and other hardware products. It will employ around 3,000 researchers and engineers.

The Prime Minister called on Samsung to expand its investment and business activities in Vietnam and make the country a base for developing key products for the international market.

Receiving Samsung Chairman Lee Jae-yong the same day, PM Chinh thanked Samsung for its contributions as Vietnam’s largest foreign direct investment (FDI) enterprise, and for actively contributing to social security and COVID-19 prevention.

Mr. Lee said that the Group will promote training and human resource development to meet global labor demand and coordinate with Vietnamese companies to further improve product quality.

Samsung plans to elevate Vietnam's role from a production base to a global research and development base for Samsung. 50% of Samsung's total worldwide supply of mobile phones is produced in Vietnam.
