Saudi Arabia proposes five-day Yemen truce

(VOVworld) - Saudi Arabia is proposing a 5-day truce in Yemen to facilitate humanitarian relief, said Saudi Foreign Minister Adel al-Jubeir Thursday. At a press conference with US Secretary of State John Kerry in Riyadh, Jubeir said the Saudi-led coalition will halt airstrikes targeting Houthi rebels in Yemen for 5 days, adding that he hopes the Houthi rebels will agree to lay down their arms. He did not announce an exact date to begin the so-called humanitarian truce. Kerry called this a major opportunity to relieve tensions in Yemen and urged the Houthis not to miss this opportunity to address the needs of the Yemeni people and find a peaceful way forward.

According to the US-based SITE intelligence group, Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula said a US airstrike in Yemen last month killed the senior Al-Qaeda official who appeared in some of their videos, including the one claiming the deadly January attack on French magazine Charlie Hebdo. The announcement of his death came in a video posted Thursday on Twitter by Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula.
