Opinion polls on Wednesday showed a narrow gap between independence supporters and opponents—48 to 52 per cent. The referendum’s result will depend on some 350,000 swing voters. Both sides used the last day before the referendum to persuade the undecided voters to support their positions.
World leaders spoke out on the referendum.  On Wednesday Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy called the Scottish referendum “a torpedo to the EU—a group to unite, not to divide nations.” Former Italian Prime Minister Enrico Letta said voting “Yes” will encourage British EU opponents and could lead to the EU’s decline. Former US President Bill Clinton said he hopes Scotland will remain part of the UK.
