At least four politicians have said they will vie for the job. Former Foreign Minister Fumio Kishida, who is chairman of the LDP’s policy research committee, former Defense Minister Shigeru Ishiba, former Minister of Internal Affairs and Communications Seiko Noda – plus Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga say they will discuss the way forward with their colleagues.

To become a candidate, a politician must have the support of at least 20 LDP members. Voting will take place between September 13 and September 15.
