(VOVworld) – Afghanistan officials said Monday that a suicide bomber attacked a military vehicle carrying Afghan army recruits near Jalalabad city in Afghanistan’s eastern province of Nangarhar, killing at least 12 people and wounding 38.

A spokesman for Nangarhar province, Ataullah Khogyani, confirmed the incident and death toll. The Afghan Ministry of Defense said the attacker rode a motorcycle and struck the bus. Injured people have been transferred from Jalalabad to Kabul. No group has claimed responsibility for the attack yet, but according to investigators, the Taliban frequently carries out attacks like this on military targets.

The attack occurred one day after US Secretary of State John Kerry paid an unannounced visit to Kabul to underline US support for Afghanistan's unity government and call on the Taliban to resume peace talks.
