Participants highlighted the creativity and enormous contributions of southern security forces to the historic event. Vu Quang Dao, former Director of the Institute of Vietnam’s Military History, said: “The 1968 general offensive and uprising was the success of people’s warfare. It mobilized the engagement of the entire people including local militias and security forces from north to south”.

The historic uprising began on January 31, 1968 when liberation forces simultaneously launched attacks on cities such as Hue, Da Nang, Quy Nhon and Sai Gon, and hundreds of towns from Quang Tri to Ca Mau provinces. The offensive destroyed huge amounts of facilities and logistics, forcing the US to de-escalate the war, stop bombardment in the North, and begin negotiations in Paris.
