(VOVworld) – Damascus has destroyed 92.2% of its chemical weapons. The remainder, 7.8% of its stockpile, is still being held at one site, according to the latest data released by the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW). The head of the UN Security Council/ OPCW task force in charge of eliminating Syria's chemical weapons, Sigrid Kaag, said that about 6.5% need to be removed from Syria, while the rest should be destroyed in Syria. Kaag said Syria will miss its April 27th deadline, but she highly praised the Syrian government’s efforts in transporting, handing over, or destroying Syria’s chemical stockpile. Chemical weapon destruction resumed April 4 after being delayed due to security reasons. The OPCW acknowledged that pace of moving chemical weapons through the port of Latakia has been accelerated. Syrian President Bashar al-Assad accepted the US and Russia’s proposal to destroy all Syrian chemical weapons late last year.
