Originating in the 17th century in Quang Yen town, the Tien Cong festival commemorates the great contribution of the town’s 17 founders in making Ha Nam island the prosperous place it is today. During the festival, clans conduct a procession of the town’s oldest men (from 80 to100 years old) to celebrate longevity. Nong Quoc Thanh, Deputy Director of the Cultural Heritage Department, said: “Tien Cong is a unique festival of Quang Ninh province. The Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism hopes that this recognition of the festival as a national intangible cultural heritage will encourage local authorities and citizens to preserve and promote this heritage.”
