(VOVWORLD) - US President Donald Trump threatened on Thursday to impose new taxes on American companies that produce goods outside the US, to push supply chains away from China and erect new trade barriers.

Trump said in a Fox Business Network interview that taxation is an “incentive” for companies to return manufacturing to the US. He did not specify whether these would be new across-the-board tariffs or another form of taxes, which would require an act of Congress.
If the US wanted to put up its own border, like other countries do to it, Apple would build 100 percent of their products in the US, Trump said.
Asked whether he would consider giving companies tax breaks to return manufacturing operations to the US, Trump said he might tax them if they don’t, and suggested that they have a duty to repatriate operations.
