Achim Steiner, administrator of the UNDP, noted that the world is currently living in uncertain times and facing a range of challenges, from conflicts to climate change, from the COVID-19 pandemic to food insecurity, all of which has an impact on human development globally.

Meeting with Ambassador Dang Hoang Giang, head of Vietnam's Permanent Mission to the UN, the UNDP administrator praised Vietnam’s human development efforts in recent years and its contributions to handling global challenges. Despite the difficulties of the past two years, Vietnam moved up two places in the Human Development Index (HDI) ranking, from 117th place to 115th place.

The first UNDP Human Development Report was written in 1990 by experts from UN agencies, international organizations, and NGOs, who analyzed global trends that affect human development and ranked countries on a scale called the Human Development Index.
