(VOVworld) - The UN Security Council unanimously adopted a resolution Friday on the establishment of a joint investigative mechanism that will assign blame for any chemical weapons attacks during the Syrian conflict, now in its fifth year, so that the perpetrators can be brought to justice.

The resolution was passed by the 15-member Council including Russia which is Syria’s ally and has a veto in the global organization.

The resolution drafted by the US has put forth the formation of an international investigative body that within a year will identify those responsible for using chemical weapons including chlorine and other chemical weapons in attacks in Syria that have killed and injured a growing number of civilians over the past two years.
