More progress in implementing the ceasefire and deliver humanitarian aid is required before resuming the negotiations, Mistura told a closed session of the UN Security Council.
The latest round of UN-brokered indirect negotiations between the Syrian government and opposition groups began in Geneva, Switzerland, on April 27, but achieved no breakthrough. There were hopes a new round of negotiations would begin by the end of May, but that prospect has been eclipsed by an escalation in violence.
